This week, we studied the French Neoclassical Style, which replaced the Rococo period. It was influenced by the rediscovery of ancient Roman and Greek art, as seen in the excavation of Pompeii. During this period, people moved away from the elaborate, curved forms of Rococo and embraced clean, straight lines and symmetry. Key features of the Neoclassical style include: Straight, slender lines in furniture and architecture. Use of classical motifs, such as columns, egg-and-dart patterns, and arabesques. Softer colors like off-white and pale pastels, with touches of gold. Furniture often made of mahogany or ebony with painted and gilded details. Neoclassical interiors were elegant but restrained, with classical ornamentation and flat, painted ceilings instead of Rococo’s complex designs. Petite Trianon – A masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture built for Madame de Pompadour and later used by Marie Antoinette. Its square rooms and minimal decoration embody the style. ENGLISH EARLY RENAISSANCE The English Early Renaissance (1550 to 1660) saw architecture in England slowly take on Renaissance styles. During the Tudor period, with rulers like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, large manor houses were built with timber frames. England’s oak forests provided timber for architecture and furniture, resulting in Tudor features like grand fireplaces and heavy wood furniture, such as gate-leg tables and settle chairs.   Settle chair and gate-leg table In the Elizabethan period, wealth led to the building of more impressive country houses, with formal gardens and long driveways. Hardwick Hall, designed by Robert Smythson, is an example of this period’s shift toward larger windows and open spaces. Architect Inigo Jones introduced Renaissance ideas from Italy, inspired by architect Palladio, with buildings like The Queen’s House that brought more elegance to English design.   Hardwick hall The Queen's House  The Jacobean style, under King James I, contin...

The French Renaissance was a time when French art, furniture, and architecture changed a lot, taking inspiration from Italy’s Renaissance. King Francois I brought Italian artists to France, including Leonardo da Vinci, which led to new ideas in building and decorating. The Renaissance style in France is famous for grand chateaux (large country houses) with beautiful gardens and rooms. The period is divided into three main stages: Early, Middle, and Late Renaissance. Each stage shows a blend of old Gothic styles and new Renaissance ideas, making these chateaux unique and impressive. ARCHITECTURE Château de Chambord: This large hunting lodge, built for Francois I, has a famous double spiral staircase designed by da Vinci, where two stairways wrap around each other without meeting. Its roof, full of chimneys and fancy windows, blends old Gothic structure with Renaissance decorations.   Château de Fontainebleau : Known for its Galerie Francois I , this grand room has colorful wall pa...
